Some Essential Info, for those who may forget...

RIDE-ALONGS - Updated to changes in SOP - 3/15/06

Here are some essential things to remember when doing your ride-alongs...

- Pass all tests and requirements of SFFR Explorers
- Call Scott to make sure you can ride AT LEAST ONE WEEK IN ADVANCE

- If you're not sure which captain to ride with or just plain aren't sure what's going on, email Scott with your questions and he'll help you out.
- Show up at a good time - 7:15 AM is standard. Leave at the Captain's say so. Otherwise, use your best judgment.

1. Remember - you are the guest of sorts to the station you're at. Help out in any way you can, be respectful and courteous. You're there to learn.

2. Safety first - listen to your Captain and the Firefighters when responding or on scene. They're looking out for you. Be careful when getting on and off the truck - watch for traffic - and on scene, be aware. Be a help, not a hindrance.

3. When on-scene of EMS calls or Injury Accidents or any situation involving a patient, remember, don't ask, and don’t tell. Do your job as an Explorer. Always direct all questions to your Captain. One little slip up with a comment can snowball into something that doesn't look good for SFFR and the Explorers.

4. Being the Explorer, you may be asked to help out with everyday tasks at the station (Volunteering to do the tough or not-so-pleasant jobs goes a long way) such as cleaning bathrooms, making beds, checking equipment, washing the truck, preparing meals, giving tours, and anything else requested of you.

5. It doesn't hurt to show your thanks for being there. Bring ice cream or something to share with the firefighters. Show your thanks, and you'll be welcome to come back.

6. Lastly, remember that when you're seen with the firefighters, you not only represent the Fire Explorers, but the city of Sioux Falls and Sioux Falls Fire Rescue. Be kind and considerate to the public. Remember that to children, a fire truck and firefighters is about the coolest thing since sliced bread. And also remember that during emergency situations, adults and children alike are likely to panic and ask a lot of questions. Always direct them to speak to your captain, but use your best judgment.

Things to remember to bring to the station:

- Yourself in full uniform ([Navy blue work pants are a good idea], Button-down Explorers shirt, with Explorers T-shirt underneath, dark shoes)

- Your Bunker Gear (Bunker pants, boots, coat, helmet, hood, gloves, and work gloves)

- Money for meals (Usually $6 will cover it. Check beforehand with your captain)

- Workout clothes if you so choose to PT
